How to measure Net Revenue Retention

How much revenue a cohort of existing customers generates compared to where they started — including expansion, contraction, and churn.

NRR = (Starting MRR + Expansion − Contraction − Churned MRR) ÷ Starting MRR × 100

Why it matters: Above 100% means existing customers grow faster than they leave (Skok's 'negative churn'). The single strongest predictor of long-term growth efficiency.

8 tools that produce NRR

Side-by-side: how each tool produces this number, what to read before adopting, and where to find the official docs. Saasly does not integrate with these tools — this is a reference so you can pick the right one for your stack.

Per-tool: what to know before you plug it in

Stripe

Computed (SQL / export)

Billing platform

Subscription billing platform with built-in dashboards and SQL analytics (Sigma).

Before you adopt: Stripe does not surface NRR natively. Compute via Sigma by pulling the same customer cohort's MRR at month 0 vs month N. Include upgrades, downgrades, churn — exclude new customers acquired after the cohort start.
Pricing: Pay-as-you-go (2.9% + $0.30 per charge). Sigma analytics: free up to 1K charges/mo, then $0.02/charge.

Paddle

Automatic

Billing platform

Merchant-of-record billing for SaaS; ProfitWell metrics now bundled.

Before you adopt: Available in ProfitWell's analytics tier. The expansion-vs-contraction split is the part to watch — Paddle's per-seat pricing model may overstate expansion if you bill per-seat upgrades.
Pricing: 5% + $0.50 per transaction (Merchant of Record model — Paddle handles VAT/sales tax globally).

Chargebee

Automatic

Billing platform

Subscription billing platform with deep enterprise feature set and analytics module.

Before you adopt: Available in the Analytics module. Confirm that expansion includes one-time upsells if you sell add-ons — Chargebee's default NRR only counts subscription-line expansion.
Pricing: Free up to $250K ARR; from $599/mo (Performance) for established SaaS.

RevenueCat

Computed (SQL / export)

Mobile subscription

Cross-platform mobile subscription SDK with analytics for iOS, Android, and web in-app purchases.

Before you adopt: RevenueCat doesn't surface NRR directly — mobile subscriptions rarely have expansion (price tiers exist but tier-jumping is uncommon). For mobile, retention rate is usually the meaningful number, not NRR.
Pricing: Free up to $2.5K MTR; then 1% of tracked revenue.

ChartMogul

Automatic

SaaS analytics

Subscription analytics platform built for funded SaaS with Stripe/Recurly/Chargebee billing.

Before you adopt: Net MRR Retention view is segmentable by plan, cohort, region. The interpretation rule: NRR > 100% means existing customers more than offset churn — your moat. Watch the 'quarter' vs 'TTM' setting — they're often confused.
Pricing: Free up to $10K MRR; then from $129/mo (Launch) to $799+/mo (Volume).

Baremetrics

Automatic

SaaS analytics

Stripe-native subscription analytics with cancellation surveys and dunning.

Before you adopt: Available in the Business tier. The 'Open Startups' public dataset is a useful external benchmark — compare your NRR against the median for similar-stage companies that publicly publish their numbers.
Pricing: From $129/mo (Metrics) to $429+/mo (Business) — seat and MRR limits.

ProfitWell (Paddle)

Automatic

SaaS analytics

Free Stripe-connected subscription metrics, now Paddle-owned.

Before you adopt: Available in the free tier — rare among free SaaS analytics tools. Expansion source data depends on accurate plan-change tracking in Stripe; if you process upgrades outside Stripe (manual invoices, custom contracts), NRR will under-report expansion.
Pricing: Metrics are free; Retain (failed payment recovery) and Price Intelligently are paid add-ons.

Saasly Calculator

Manual entry

Manual calculator

Manual-entry calculator that computes the core SaaS metrics with Skok-tier classification.

Before you adopt: Enter starting MRR, expansion, contraction, churn — get NRR percentage with Skok-tier interpretation. The benchmark page for NRR shows where your number sits relative to your industry stage.
Pricing: Free forever, no signup.

The Saasly Calculator computes NRR (and 15 other SaaS metrics) from manual input — useful when you've pulled the underlying numbers out of one of the tools above and want a quick sanity check with industry benchmark percentiles.
